Those of you who visited our stand at The Great British Land Rover Show, back in November, would’ve come across Shane Smith’s stunningly simple 110 XS. Finished in Corris Grey with contrasting gloss black roof, arches and trim, Shane bought the range topper brand new back in 2013, taking delivery on Halloween.
“Once Land Rover announced that they would be ceasing Defender production, I knew I had to get a new one,” muses Shane. “The 90 wasn’t practical enough, and the 130 too big for what I wanted, so the 110 was the obvious choice. I really like the double cab pickups, but the back seats aren’t that nice on a long day out, and I didn’t need 7 seats, so the Utility was perfect.”
Shane has had a Land Rover in some shape or form for more than 20 years. The love-affair started when Shane was in his early-20s, when he picked up a 1965 Series 2A 88″ off a friend. It was in bits, and became something of a long term project, with the car only leaving Shane’s custody last year! A year after picking the Series up, Shane bagged himself a tidy 90 300TDI as a daily-driver. This lasted a good few years, before all the real-life responsibilities that family life can bring, such as children and pets, meant it just wasn’t practical enough any more, and it had to go.
Chesterfield-based Shane drives his 110 regularly, for work and play. A flexo-graphic printer by trade, Shane has gone to great lengths to keep the 110 Utility looking as good, if not better, than the day it rolled off the production line. This is by no means a cosetted show pony though; it gets used as Solihull intended, taking Shane and his family across the UK and Europe on holidays and expeditions.
Shane, like us, is a big fan of the “less is more” approach, which is why you won’t see any bolt on chrome or generic products adorning the grey 110. Everything serves a purpose, and he likes the best of the best. Which is how he came to know us.
Shane had been looking for a reliable, high-quality drawer-based storage solution for some time, and came across Paranoid at Peterborough Land Rover Show last year. After talking to us and trying out the products for himself on our show stand, he placed an order there and then. “I’d looked at a few options, and once I’d seen the Paranoid systems in the flesh, there was no comparison. Not only in the quality of the drawers themselves, but the knowledge and passion the team showed was second to none.” High praise indeed.
Before having the drawer fitted by the team at Paranoid HQ, Shane had made a few very well thought out, minor modifications of his own, including cupholders where the rear windows would normally be, and safety items on his rear door window mesh. He makes good use of his drawer, keeping towing equipment, additional safety gear and camping goodies in there, meaning everything is always on hand, whenever he might need it. Carpeted upper trim in the rear cargo area make the cabin a nicer place to be, and leather dash-top and interior handles add to the already fairly sorted XS-spec.
Additional modifications follow the trend, with them all being functional but high quality. A genuine Land Rover snorkel means Shane doesn’t need to worry about turning back when the trail gets damp, and Sawtooth alloy wheels with BF Goodrich AT2s mean the trusty 110 has the edge off road, whilst keeping its subtle factory looks.
Shane is already eyeing up one of our brand-new Defender 110 Roof Racks, and with more innovative Defender products just around the corner, we’re expecting to see a lot more of Shane in 2019.
